Born at a railroad junction
Conover grew up where two rail lines met in a "Y," and the city says it was first known as "Wye Town." It was chartered in 1876. Like Hickory, it built its economy on furniture. The downtown Broyhill furniture plant closed in 2004, and the city's Conover Station project is reusing the old Warlong Glove building as a transit hub, library and community center.
The Bolick Historic District and the George Huffman Farm are on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown's street clock carries the town's founding year, 1876.
Rock Barn
Rock Barn Golf & Spa, at 3791 Clubhouse Drive NE, has a Conover address, even though many people think of it as Hickory. The community was established in 1997 around the club.
Recent sales there have ranged from about $440K to $1.3 million, with a median of roughly $688K, according to neighborhoods.com. If you want golf-course living near Hickory, this is usually the first place I'll show you.
