Lake Hickory & Mountain View Homes for Sale
Two very different ways to live in the Hickory area: on or near Lake Hickory along the north side of the city, or in the growing Mountain View area to the south, where most of Hickory's newer subdivisions are. Here's what to know about each.
A 4,223-acre lake on the Catawba River
Lake Hickory was created when Oxford Dam on the Catawba River was completed in the late 1920s. Duke Energy operates it today. The lake covers about 4,223 acres with roughly 105 miles of shoreline, and it touches four counties: Catawba, Alexander, Caldwell and Burke. It's also the water supply for Hickory, Conover and Long View.
It's a fraction of Lake Norman's size, so waterfront listings are fewer and farther between. Waterfront homes come up on the Hickory side, in northwest Catawba County, and across the water in Alexander and Caldwell counties.
Waterfront neighborhoods
- Moores Ferry: on the south side of the main channel in northwest Hickory, built from the mid-1980s, with boat slips and a clubhouse.
- Governors Harbour and Olivers Landing: two established lake neighborhoods that come up often in Hickory waterfront searches.
- Anchors Landing: a gated community on the Granite Falls side of the lake.
- Lake Hickory Country Club: the club is in Hickory near the lake, if you want golf close to the water.

Buying on the water? Ask about the dock and any Duke Energy shoreline permits, water depth at the dock in late summer and winter, and whether the lot is in a cove or on the main channel. I'll help you check all three before you make an offer.
Getting on the water
- Rotary-Geitner Park (2035 12th St Dr NW, Hickory): boat ramp and fishing pier on the lake. The city is redeveloping it as the future Deidra Lackey Memorial Park.
- Hickory Riverwalk: a 2.3-mile walkway along the lake that opened in April 2024, with what the city calls the longest inverted Fink truss bridge in North America.
- Hickory City Park (1581 12th St Dr NW) and Glenn C. Hilton Jr. Memorial Park (2000 6th St NW), which has a canoe launch and boardwalk.
- Alexander County side: the Wittenburg and Dusty Ridge access areas, plus several marinas.

Mountain View
Mountain View is an unincorporated community in Catawba County along NC-127, about 4 miles south of central Hickory. The 2020 Census counted 3,590 residents in its 4.67 square miles. Hickory's annexations have nearly split the community in two, so some Mountain View-area homes are inside Hickory city limits and some aren't. Most homes here use a Hickory 28602 mailing address.
New and newer homes
Zion Springs (D.R. Horton, 4697 Fanning Rd) is selling from about $255K as of September 25, 2026, and the builder describes it as being in Hickory's Mountain View area. Nearby in southeast Hickory, D.R. Horton's Huffman Ridge starts at about $282K. See all of them on the new construction page.
Resale neighborhoods
Neighborhoods in the Mountain View area that come up for resale include Berkshire Place, Wallace's View, Waterford Hills, Braxton Gate, Maple Crest and Brookstone.
Schools and outdoors
- Schools: Catawba County Schools. Homes here are commonly assigned to Mountain View Elementary, Jacobs Fork Middle and Fred T. Foard High. Check the exact address.
- Bakers Mountain Park: a 189-acre county park at 6680 Bakers Mountain Road with the highest point in Catawba County, about 1,780 feet.
- Henry Fork River Park: a City of Hickory park at 5655 Sweet Bay Lane.
- Getting around: NC-127 runs straight into central Hickory, and I-40 is a short drive north.
