A cotton-mill town with a big-tech neighbor
Maiden was incorporated on March 7, 1883, as a cotton-mill site and trading center, and it sits across the line between Catawba and Lincoln counties. The name comes from Maiden Creek.
Today the town is also home to one of Apple's data centers, announced in 2012, with a large solar farm alongside it. Football is a big deal here; the town's motto is "Biggest little football town in the world." Maiden High was also the first public high school in North Carolina with its own observatory.
For buyers, Maiden's big draw is location. It's about 15 miles from Hickory and about 10 miles from the west side of Lake Norman around Denver, so it works for households with one commute toward Hickory and one toward Charlotte (approximate distances).

Schools, parks and events
- Schools: Maiden High (Catawba County Schools) serves the town. Some Maiden addresses, including Shannon Woods, are assigned to Bandys High instead. Check the exact address.
- Parks: the Maiden Parks & Recreation Center and softball complex, Maiden Municipal Park with a splash pad, Union Street Park, Rosenwald Park, and a dog park on Water Plant Road.
- Events: the town's Fall Festival is Saturday, October 3, 2026 (car show, chili cook-off and rides), the Luminary Service is December 13, and the Christmas Parade is the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
