A county seat with a courthouse square
Newton was established in 1845 as the seat of the new Catawba County and incorporated in 1855. Its best-known landmark is the 1924 Catawba County Courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the History Museum of Catawba County at 30 N. College Avenue.
The Newton Downtown Historic District and the North Main Avenue Historic District are both on the National Register, along with St. Paul's Church and Cemetery (1808) and Grace Reformed Church (1887).
Newton is also home to Hickory Motor Speedway, which despite the name sits on US-70 in Newton. And every August, the town hosts Soldiers Reunion; the 2026 event was the 137th.

Schools, parks and getting around
- Schools: Newton-Conover City Schools serves much of the town, with Newton-Conover High and Discovery High. Parts of the Newton area are assigned to Catawba County Schools instead, including Maiden High and Fred T. Foard High. Check the exact address.
- Parks: the city runs Southside, Northside, Westside, East Newton, Little Brook and Chadwick parks, Yount Park downtown, and Jacob Fork Park on NC-10 West.
- Soldiers Reunion: held each August; the 137th was August 8–20, 2026.
- Getting around: Hickory is about 8 miles away, Lake Norman's west side is roughly 20–25 miles, and Charlotte is roughly 50 miles (approximate distances).
